Open-source AI agents for HR that reach past the HR suite

The open-source AI Operating System

AI agents for HR answer policy questions, prepare new hires, run departure checks and find interview slots. Most ship inside an HR suite and read that suite's records; Kortix is the open-source AI Operating System they run on, reaching the inbox, identity provider, drive and wiki. You set the approval gates; each workflow shows where its own sits.

HR policy desk

A cron trigger fires every 15 minutes.
Each firing spawns a fresh session in its own sandbox with no memory of the last run.
It never sends an email; every answer is a Gmail draft for HR to review and send.
HR reviews the drafts, sends what's right, and handles the escalations directly.

Five HR workflows, each ending at a person

The agent does the logistics, and a person decides about a person.

Policy questions

Drafts the handbook answer, quotes the section.

It reads the HR inbox every 15 minutes, drafts a reply from the documented policy in Notion, and posts anything personal, legal or compensation-related to Slack instead of answering.

Example output

two drafted, one escalated

Onboarding

Prepares day one, holds the access.

A new-hire record starts a session that prepares the Workspace account, the channel memberships and a first-week checklist, and stops at an approval before anything is granted.

Example output

access waits for a person

Offboarding

Pulls access the day a departure is marked.

It checks Okta on a schedule, revokes single sign-on, removes the GitHub org seat and reclaims licenses, holding the ownership transfer for approval and never deleting an account.

Example output

hr/departure-1042.md

Interview loops

Finds a slot the whole panel can make.

It reads every candidate marked ready to schedule in Greenhouse, checks each panelist's calendar, and drafts the proposal and the invites for a coordinator to send.

Screening

Scores against the written rubric, with quotes.

Each application is read against the role's rubric and comes back with strengths, gaps and the evidence behind the score, and a person makes every advance-or-reject call.

FAQ

What HR teams ask first

What is an AI agent for HR?

Software that does one HR job end to end under rules you set: it reads the policy, drafts the reply, prepares the account or checks the departure list, then reports what it did and stops where a person is needed.

How can AI be used in HR?

Answering documented policy questions, preparing onboarding, running departure checks, scheduling interview loops and scoring applications against a written rubric. Each of those is coordination work with a decision at the end, and the decision stays with a person.

Is HR job in danger due to AI?

Coordination work goes first: chasing a panel's calendars, provisioning an account, answering the same policy question again. Agents take that on and stop at the decision, so the judgement part of the role stays with a person.

What is the best AI to use for HR?

Match it to where your HR work happens. If most of it sits in the HR suite's records, that suite's agent is the shortest route. If it runs through the inbox, the identity provider and the drive, use an open-source AI Operating System you host and connect to those systems.

Can I self-host the HR agents?

Yes. Run it on Kortix Cloud, in your VPC, or on your own on-prem network. Self-host is free, so the policy files the agents read and the gates the team sets stay on infrastructure your team runs.

Do the agents decide anything about a person?

No. They draft, prepare, score with evidence and escalate. Hiring decisions, policy exceptions and anything about someone's situation stay with a member of the HR team, and the agent's job ends where that call starts.

Put the HR agents on a stack you own.

Each workflow is a file you can read, change and host yourself; start with the one that crosses the most systems you already run.
